5 Steps For Installing Seamless Gutters

by Wallace Gonzales

Gutters are important if you don't want rainwater sheeting off the roof and soaking the soil next to the foundation. To minimize maintenance and repair needs, seamless gutters are the best option to install.

1. Layout Planning

All installations begin with planning the gutter layout and then measuring the roof perimeter for the necessary trough lengths. First, downspout locations are determined. Then, your gutter professional plans the route of each gutter trough to the nearest downspout. The trough routes are measured so that the gutters can be formed to the correct length so that seams won't be necessary.

2. Material Choice

There are two main material options when it comes to seamless gutters — steel or aluminum. For most homeowners, aluminum is the better choice. It costs less and it is extremely durable, meaning it won't rust or degrade over time. Further, aluminum weighs less than steel, so it puts less stress on the eaves of the roof where it is installed. Aluminum gutters are also available in a range of colors to match any home.

3. Trough Forming

Your gutter installer will have a machine in their work truck that they feed the sheets of aluminum through. The machine shapes the trough and cuts it down to the desired length. Next, holes are cut in the trough where each downspout will be located, and end caps are attached to the end of each guttering length. Finally, the gutter is shaped to go around any corners it must traverse.

4. Gutter Hanging

There are a couple of attachment methods, but gutter clips are superior to bolt attachments because they do not create a hole in the gutter trough. Fewer holes, much like fewer seams, means less of a chance of leaks. The clips are hidden underneath the eaves so they don't detract from the appearance of your home. Your installer will attach the troughs at a slight slope so that water runs freely toward the downspouts.

5. Downspout Installation

Downspouts are fitted into the holes that were previously cut for them, and then they are clipped to the house so they don't move around. The bottom of the spout will be routed away from the foundation, with the use of a folding extender if necessary. They can also be routed into an underground drainage system. The downspout attachment point in the trough is one of the few areas where a seam is unavoidable, but it is well-sealed with caulking to guard against leaks.
